    Kenton Young

    Familiar Ring/kenton-young.jpg
    WINTER 2018 - PRESENT

A lover of singing, Kenton not only sings with Familiar Ring, but has sung with the BYU Men’s Chorus since Fall 2017. He stumbled into the group and acappella when he heard they needed a low bass. In fact we have even relabeled the last line on our sheet music “Kenton 2” for some pieces!

Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1994; his advanced age has given him a chance to develop hobbies in such productive things as piano, reading, and singing; and less productive interests in video games, TV, and politics. His parents moved frequently during his childhood, so he can claim about ten states as home; including Texas, California, upstate New York, and Utah.

After serving in “the best mission in the universe”, the England Leeds Mission, from 2014-2016, he went back to spinning life’s many plates and returned to study at BYU. He eventually settled on economics for his undergrad, but not before marrying the “most beautiful, wonderful woman in the world”, Kimmy Bell, in 2017. Yeah, that wedding ring is really familiar to him by now.

Ryan served in the Taiwan Taipei Mission from 2015-2017.

He met his sweetheart Kaylyn while they were both working as Physics TAs at BYU, and they have been married since June 2020 (#COVIDwedding). Ryan loves all things music, including singing tenor in Familiar Ring and other choirs, playing the ukulele, and writing and arranging songs. He is also a self-proclaimed nerd who enjoys learning about anything STEM-related, playing video games, and reading fantasy novels.

Brian joined Familiar Ring as a tenor during winter of his freshman year in 2018, then became the director of the group in fall 2018. He is from Wenatchee, Washington and served in the São Paulo East Mission in Brazil. He graduated from BYU in April 2021 with a degree in Microbiology, leaving to attend the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

Brian is also convinced he will retire and become an old cat lady (cat man? That just doesn’t sound right. Cat lady it is). He is happily married to the love of his life, Amaya, and loves to cook and watch movies with her.

A baritone at the core, he’ll occasionally call upon his inner tenor for some stupid high notes that are sure to swoon the ladies… hopefully. Being in the group has got Jonathan hooked on writing a cappella music, giving us hits like Fresh Eyes, Radioactive, Hey Jude, and his own creation, The Hunt.

When he’s got some time, he likes to write music and poetry, play video games and volleyball, skateboard, and talk in Spanish. Jon is studying Communications and hopes to eventually work in Public Relations or Human Resources. “Long Live A Cappella!”

He is from Wenatchee, Washington and served his mission in São Paulo, Brazil. Although he is studying microbiology with a chemistry minor, he plans to go to dental school with the ultimate goal of becoming an orthodontist.

Brian is also convinced he will retire and become an old cat lady (cat man? That just doesn’t sound right. Cat lady it is). He is happily married to the love of his life, and loves to go hiking and rock climbing with her.

    FALL 2017 - PRESENT

Bradley is from Idaho Falls, Idaho. He studies Computer Science and loves music, computers, and everything in-between. He served a mission in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. He loves being a member of Familiar Ring and is referred to, in the group, as "Brad the Dad" or just "dad." He sings the high tenor part.

Since joining the group he has proposed with that familiar ring to his best friend and sweetheart, Emily. He also loves to write piano music, learn languages, and watch Studio C.

    Johnathan Lee

    FALL 2017 - WINTER 2018; WINTER 2019 - PRESENT

Jonathan joined Familiar Ring in the Fall of 2017 after auditioning on a whim, eventually taking the reins of Director the following semester. Scheduling conflicts necessitated a semester break, but he jumped right back in as a regular old member, where he has happily sung since.

    Kenton Young
